Processing alpaca wool
The processing of alpaca wool begins with the shearing of the animal, which is carried out in a way that causes the least possible stress to the alpaca. This is followed by the washing of the collected fiber and then spinning, which can be of two types:
- Carded spinning;
- Combed spinning;
Finally, to proceed with the measurement of the yarns for fabric production activities, the yarn count is determined.

Alpaca fiber is highly prized and comes from two breeds of alpaca: Huacaya and Suri. The fleece of the Huacaya is dense, with a crimped fiber that grows perpendicular to the animal’s body, giving it a puffy appearance. In contrast, the fleece of the Suri alpaca is much longer, grows downward along the animal’s body, and the fiber is shinier and silkier than that of the Huacaya.
